Client

The clients are Sunderland College and Salon Professional Dept. and they need me produce a instructional video of a tutorial of a how to show a specific barbering technique to help them during their course. Sunderland College makes up 3 different campus's, City Campus, Bede Campus and Washington Campus. They offer different courses between the campus's ranging from Photography to Engineering, Creative Media to Construction and Drama to Hairdressing. Looking into what they offer for at City Campus for their hairdressing course, they offer level 2 and 3 courses, full time for 1 year on level 2 and the same for level 3.After completing both levels, the college helps in finding a career in a variety of sectors in barbering, including working in a barber shop/salon, working in self employment and even working over-sea's in hotels or even on-board cruise ships.

Demographic/Audience

The audience are from the ages 16 to 18 and are those who are either interested in the course or attending the course. What they need from me is a for the instructional video to be clean and informative, otherwise it may be harder from them to understand how to do the specific techniques. Since i am a part of the audiences age group, i know myself that young people can have short attention spans, especially when taking in information from videos. Since i know this is true, i will try to make my tutorial video short but long enough to show the information needed while keeping the attention of people.

New Modes of Help: Best Practices for Instructional Video - Research Paper

Once i read this research paper i found is that instructional videos use the same codes and conventions as print adverts. Print adverts break down the

Common Codes and Conventions in media are Symbolic Codes, Technical Codes and Written Codes.

Symbolic Codes - Setting, Mise En Scene, Acting and Colour.
Technical Codes - Camerawork, Editing, Audio and Lighting
Written Codes - Printed Language and Spoken Language
Conventions - Form Conventions, Story Conventions and Genre Conventions

Video 1 - 'How to Kickflip in 5 Minutes'

Symbolic Codes:

The Setting of the instructional video made by CCS on 'How to Kickflip in 5 Minutes' is in a park with open flat ground, a children's play park in the background and also bleak walls and fencing.

The Mise En Scene of the video consists of Dale Decker, the actor/skateboarder giving the information and tips during the video. The props are the skateboard used during the video and also a microphone on Dale's shirt.

Technical Codes:

The video consists of multiple different camera angles, starting after the opening with a Medium Shot and the same camera angle with the shot itself being slightly unsteady spread across the entirety of the video. There are also static mid shots from the waist down to show Dale Decker, the actor for the video, performing a kickflip. The same shot is used but the camera follows the skateboard as it flips in the air, this is in other parts of the video. There are also a couple of full body shots, both static and non-static. Also in the video they use a knee level shot which moves into a mid level shot while Dale shows foot positioning with his hands. Over all the video consists of mid level shots, medium shots, tracking shots and some full body shots with or without static camerawork.

The editing of the video consists of voice-overs, text on screen, music playing over the audio slightly quiet but just about able to hear and quick/ seamless transitions between clips.

The audio consists of just the speech in the clip, the voiceover of other clips and the music faintly playing over the top.

The lighting of the video seems to all just be natural light from the sun while being filmed outside in a open area with walls on some of the sides.

Written Codes:

Text on the screen informing us of the name of the actor in the video.

Effectiveness and Weakness of the video

The instructional video on 'How to Kickflip in 5 Minutes' was very effective in the fact of portraying information and visually informing how to do it. This is a effective way to show information as some people are visual learners, meaning that they learn things better through being shown than reading information. With the video being short and simple with enough information to satisfy the needs of viewers, it also helps being short as many people like myself have short attention spans, which if the video was longer would mean most people would lose interest very quickly. Overall the video is very effective in the sense of being short enough to give all the information needed visually and vocally without being long enough to make people lose interest in the video.

The weaknesses of the instructional video are the lack of text on the screen to show more detail into things and the lack of indicators and indicating arrows in the video. I think these are the weaknesses of the video as they could have been included to add more depth to the video as they could have been a good inclusion in the video to make the information easier to understand for some people. This is because, with some people finding it easier to take in information through visually being shown, others prefer to have written information as well as the visual information. Therefor if this was included in the video it would add more effectiveness to the overall video.

Video 2 - '!! MUST WATCH AROD FLAT TOP FREESTYLE HIP HOP VOL.2'

Symbolic Codes:

The setting for the second instructional video, '!! MUST WATCH AROD FLAT TOP FREESTYLE HIP HOP VOL.2', it is filmed in a barber shop surrounded by multiple memorabilia items.

The Mise En Scene of the video consists of barbering tools, scissors and clippers/shears. The outfits seen are a Bape hoodie, normal clothing items and the gown for the cut hair.

Technical Codes:

This instructional video consists of Extreme Close-Ups (ECU), Big Close-Ups (BCU), Close-up (CU), Medium Close-Ups (MCU) and Medium Shots (MS). Most of the camera angles when shot are not static shots, most are moving with the mannerisms of the barber cutting the persons hair. With the ECU,BCU and CU shots they all move around the persons face and hair while it is being cut, more so to show greater detail to the techniques used for the certain hair style. Also, most shots In the instructional video are Two Shots, as both the barber and the customer are visibly seen throughout most shots.

The editing of the video consists of quick and easy cuts between shots, there is no text on the screen or information on screen regarding what they are doing. Also, the only audio that can be hear is a freestyle rap about the haircut and what seems to be instructions of a sort in how to do it and the steps.

The lighting used in the video are Key Lighting and a Back Light, which are visible in the video.

Written Codes:

There is no visible text on screen throughout the entire video, which is a weakness I will speak on.

Effectiveness and Weakness of the video

The instructional video on '!! MUST WATCH AROD FLAT TOP FREESTYLE HIP HOP VOL.2' has a very interesting way of portraying the information across the video. The information is portrayed through a freestyle rap which seems to show the steps on how to do the certain haircut style, a Flat Top retro style. The variety of camera angles used are good and keep the audience informed by showing in better definition what they are doing while the freestyle rap plays over the top. The transitions used are good as well as they are simple and move smoothly between each shot.

The weaknesses of the instructional video are very simple. They do not include any text n the screen to show whats happening or to address the people included/ tools used. Another weakness is the fact the only audio in the video is a freestyle rap which seems to tell us how to do the hair cut but with very minimal detail. There could be more audio in the video maybe to say in more detail how it is done or even to make it more formal to the viewers. the video overall would be more effective if they had included text on screen and had other audio aside from a freestyle rap.

For our own instructional video, we can take the editing techniques used in the video to make our own better. The techniques which would come in handy for our own video are overlaying text and audio over clips which have no speech in the clip. Also, having quiet music playing over the top would be a good idea to do for our own video as it would not drown out any speech or other audio playing alongside it.
